Ernest Halley
Ernest
says he dated
Claudia
Graham
at CHS. Cute lady! Says he
was not much into girls at this stage. However
he was really into the band and made All State Orchestra for two years at CHS!
Ernest
attended OU, TU and finally graduated from OSU with an Industrial Arts degree.
Upon graduation he immediately went into the Navy for two years, got out
three months early and taught at Edison Jr. High in
Tulsa
for two years. Then he found a much
better paying job teaching in
Milwaukee
. However, teaching in an inner-city
school was not his bag and he quit and took a position with Kemper Insurance in
Chicago
as an inspector. Then on to a position with U.S. Gypsum in charge of fire
protection. An opportunity with a
railroad company became available and he was in charge of fire and hazardous
materials. The railroad was sold in
1989 and his position was eliminated, so he joined the Federal Railroad
Administration as a Hazardous Materials Inspector.
While working with the Insurance Company he met his wife who worked in the same
building. They were married in 1966.
No kids, but lots of nieces and nephews.
Ernest
loves golf and photography … and of course playing bagpipes.
Not only are the bagpipes fun but while you cannot make a living from
playing the bagpipes, you can make a little “walking-around”
money.
Ernest
says he has won a few trophies in piping and drumming Shrine Band competitions.
No, he has not retired yet. He says
he has a dream job. He gets all the
vacation time he wants and will work for at least two more years so his wife
will be eligible for Medicare.
Gads … we are all eligible for Medicare now. Could it be that we are getting
old?
