Gary Martin

As many of you may know, Gary Martin passed away in 2000.  Some of you may remember that he and Ernest Halley played the bagpipes during “assembly” at our 40th reunion. Those of you who have Tom Tom’s will see a picture of Gary showing his resume on a poster board.  This writer lost his Tom Tom over 40 years ago but still remembers that picture.  Gary was in so many organizations and an officer in all.  Gary was also a straight “E” student and a member of the CHS All-State Orchestra.

Gary married classmate Ann Noe but were divorced some years later.  Ann was also a very bright student. She received an AS from Rutgers , BSN , MA and PhD from Univ. of Pennsylvania and in 1981 (our last contact) was a professor at Wilener University .

Gary went on to get his AB, BD & PhD at Princeton .  He also attended Ludwin-Maximilian University in Munich and Yale .  Gary became a Presbyterian minister and true to his form was an officer in many civic organizations.  He has four children.

Gary gave me my first sex education experience in the 3rd grade.  Gene Landrath , Carl Washburn , Charles Bright and I were listening as he stated that a woman had to have sex before she could have a baby.  Fred and Gene challenged the statement.  “It is true said Gary … I read it in the
Encyclopedia.”  If he read it in the Encyclopedia … it had to be true!  I was thinking “not my mom!”  Then we all looked at Charles Bright who had seven sisters and thought “if that is true his mom must have had sex eight times.”

Gary was not into athletics in school.  He was into music and
academics.    I remember asking him what his dad, Albert Martin , did for a living.  He said that he was a candle maker, but that was only for three months of the year and that he was a stage manager. I had no idea what a stage manager was until we entered CHS. Gary ’s dad was indeed a stage manager.  It was through him that our assembly and Daze events emerged.

Anybody else have memories of Gary ?  Send them and I will
pass them on.
