Paul Hancock

Ever meet a true HERO??  Well, let us tell you a story about one … our classmate, Mr. Paul Hancock .

It seems that Paul and Linda Oxley broke up during the summer of 1954 before our junior year (we think it was because Paul wore funny hats all the time … see below).  Some folks on Reservoir Hill had a huge swimming pool at their home and invited a bunch of CHS students for a swimming party.  Paul had lifeguard training so they paid him to be the lifeguard.

At the party was Linda Oxley , with date Butch Jones.  She was trying to make Paul jealous and was doing a good job of it.  If you knew Butch Jones … well he was one of those “wild and crazy guys.”  It was a good thing that they had a lifeguard because some did not know how to swim, including Linda !

Linda was standing at the edge of the pool, at the deep end.  Along came her date, Butch Jones, who PUSHED HER IN THE POOL.  This is a true story … Linda went under the water TWICE and was ready to go under for the third time when Paul dived into the pool and pulled her to safety while Butch was yelling “swim Linda, swim.”  Paul probably saved her life!

Everyone ganged around Paul and Linda to see if she was okay.  Yes, Paul Hancock was a true hero.  Linda was last heard saying “ Paul my hero, will you marry me?”  Of course they got married immediately after they graduated from CHS!
